Best Gaming Display - OLED vs LCD

In this article I will explain why an OLED display is a much better gaming display than an LCD/LED display.

1) Superior Motion Clarity and Detail Retention

OLED's near-instantaneous pixel response times (typically ~0.1ms or less) mean pixels switch states almost immediately, resulting in virtually no motion blur or ghosting. This preserves far more fine detail during movement compared to LCD TVs, where pixel transitions are slower (often 4-10ms or more, even on high-end Mini-LEDs). More detail and clarity is what you will get on an OLED vs an LCD display.

It's not only when you move around in a game you will experience the higher detail and clarity of an OLED. It's also when you are standing still. In many games there are objects that are in motion. It can be foliage moving with the wind, NPCs and cars moving. Here the game will just look much cleaner, more detailed and natural on an OLED.

2) Input-lag

Standard input lag measurements (e.g., from RTINGS or Leo Bodnar testers) often show OLED and high-end LCD TVs neck-and-neck at around 5-15ms in Game Mode. Those tests typically measure from the input signal to when the panel begins to change (often at the middle or top of the screen).

However, what many fail to understand is the advantage OLED's much faster pixel response time gives when it comes to input-lag, or perceived input-lag.

Faster pixel response time, adds to the effective end-to-end latency—the time from your controller input to when you actually see a clear, fully transitioned change on screen. Vincent Theo from HDTVTest demonstrated this using a high-speed camera test (see video in link below): OLED pixels can fully switch states in as little as 0.1-0.3ms, while LCD pixels (even fast VA or IPS panels) take 4-15ms or more due to liquid crystal transitions. This means on OLED, you visually register movements (like a character jumping or an enemy appearing) noticeably sooner—effectively reducing perceived lag by several milliseconds in fast-action scenarios.

3) Black levels

OLED displays have perfect blacks and infinite Contrast → OLED pixels turn off completely for true black levels, with no light bleed or blooming (halo effects around bright objects on dark backgrounds). This creates immersive depth in games with dark scenes, like horror titles or space adventures, far surpassing LED/Mini-LED TVs where backlights cause grayish blacks or halos.

We typically have a lot of dark scenes in many games. Just think about night-time. So OLED's amazing black levels are very important for better immersion in games.

4) HDR - small bright high-lights.

Not only does OLED excel in black levels. They are also able to show small very bright high-lights on a darker back ground MUCH brighter than an LCD/LED display.

This is very important in many games too. Just think of open world games, where we walk around during night time, looking at the stars in the sky or other smaller bright high-lights from car lights or all the lights in a city at night.

5) LCD advantages

There is none. End of story ☺️

That's not entirely true, but they are so small, that they are really not worth mentioning. Get an OLED. You will thank me later.

OLED used to have an issue with burn-in. It's not an issue on newer OLEDs. Don't use any time on worrying about it.

LCD/LED's can get brighter, especially on larger areas of the screen and with less ABL dimming. If you only game during daytime and in a very bright room, then an LCD/LED might be a better choice than an OLED. But if you do this then nothing matters. You are going against how HDR is supposed to be consumed (in a dark or dimly lit room). You can't see dim lights in a dark scene in a bright room and you totally lose HDR impact.

6) Monitor vs TV (OLED)

OLED TVs usually have much brighter HDR than a monitor. It's because TVs use much less ABL dimming in brighter scenes.
