Control Resonant

September 2026

HDR analysis and setup guide for Control Resonant on PC and PS5 Pro.

The HDR implementation is the same on both platforms.

I don't really like the game's visual presentation. Partially because HDR looks pretty bad and partially because of some artistic choices I don't like. The two in combination gives an unpleasant image in my opinion. Control Resonant is a surreal game but it must still look natural in how light and HDR behaves. It doesn't, to my eyes.

Update October 1, 2026

The game has received a patch on PC and consoles that fixes the over-saturation and color hue shift. Picture 13 is in-game HDR before the patch. Picture 14 is after the patch. Picture 15 is SDR.

The good:

The bad:

Artistic:

– Fog is used in almost every scene of the game. It lowers contrast and washes out the image. We barely see blacks get deep. At least that's what I have seen in the first parts of the game. I have not completed the game.

PC vs PS5 Pro:

If we use high settings and no ray tracing on PC, then shadows will look very similar to those on PS5 Pro's performance mode. But if we use Ultra settings and Ultra ray tracing (path tracing) on PC, than the whole game will be shadowed differently. In some scenes it can have a quite dramatic effect with darker shadows. These darker shadows help the game have more contrast and that is nice when the game has all this fog that lowers contrast.

In picture 8 path tracing is used on PC. In picture 9 and 10 path tracing is not used and here we see shadows are much higher than with patch tracing in this scene.

RenoDX HDR mod (in beta):

There is currently a mod in beta/draft. It fixes the HDR colors saturated look and hue change. It also pulls down the biggest brightest highlights to more normal levels. I like how this mod fixes/improves the main complaints about the HDR implementation.
In picture 11 and 12 we see how the RenoDX mod makes the orange color on the sign look yellow. Yellow is how it looks in SDR. We also see slightly less saturated colors. That is also more in line with how SDR looks.

Setup recommendations:

PS5:

Chromatic aberration:

Remember to turn of the effects in picture 3 such as lens distorting (chromatic aberration) because it ruins fine detail and vignette that darkens the edge of the screen. Film grain and motion blur is more personal taste. I always turn that off myself.
