Silent Hill 2 Remake

December 2025

HDR analysis Silent Hill 2 on PC and PS5 Pro.

The HDR implementation is the same on PC and PS5.

In-game adjustments:

HDR max Luminance
Sets up max luminance (highlights). Set that to what your TV can do on a 10% window.

HDR mid Luminance / HDR brightness
Both sliders do the same. They change the entire brightness spectrum from max luminance, midtones to shadows.

HDR min Luminance
It changes the shadows

Black levels:
The game has different black level raises, depending on scene/area, but there is always a black level raise. It's intentional by the developer to give more detail in different scenes. I don't like that. We have a flash light, so I see no reason for it. If there are no light sources than it should be 100% black.

Paper white.
Doesn't really make sense to analyze in a game that is so dark most of the time. I would just use the standard brightness level, that the developer has chosen. They look good enough to me.

PS5:
The standard settings on PC (50, -9, 1.2) is already pretty good (except the black level raise).
GamingTech has suggested some optimized settings. They are vastly different settings but the end result is almost the same (I suspect that standard settings has changed since his video). He gets the same brightness, but a tiny bit lower black levels. I won't list them here. Instead go and watch his video to support his great work in this link.

In the next post I will show his settings compared to the current standard in-game settings, so you can see what they change (look at the graph).
I see no fix to the black levels in the game on console.

PC:
A full RenoDX HDR mod has just been released for PC, that totally "fixes" the black level raise in the entire game. It also tone maps better and gives us a lot of adjustments, such as paper white.

The first two pictures are from PS5 Pro. They show different black levels in different areas of the game. The last two pictures are from PC with RenoDX.
